GAINESVILLE, Fla. (March
15, 2008) – Six time IHRA World Champion Clay Millican entered the NHRA
AC Delco Gatornationals prepared to use the event as a test session. With
only two shots at the track from losing Friday’s qualifying due to rain
Millican and his Knoll Gas Motorsports, SinFuel Choppers, Torco Racing
Fuels Top Fuel Dragster knew they had to be on top of things today.
Although
the team has sat out the first two events of the 2008 race season, they
were ready to get qualified and begin their year.
During the first qualifying session of the day, Millican went out and shook the tires hard. Millican did not make it down the track the first session, but Team Torco remained optimistic. In the second and final qualifying session of the event, Millican ran a 4.62, 325.77 MPH to put him in the No. 10 spot.
“I’m just proud of everybody on this team,” said an excited Millican. “They came out here and our first run was a little tough. We were the very first car [out] in that first session and was the first one out for the second session. We were able to go right down through there. I’m proud of everybody.”
Tomorrow, Millican will pair up against Brandon Bernstein with Bernstein having lane choice. Millican is confidant his team will be able to compete well against Bernstein’s 4.58, 330.63 MPH.
“At this point lane choice really does not matter, because we don’t have it. Obviously
it doesn’t matter to us, but we’re racing one of the best cars in the
business and I think we’re right there and ready for them.”
With the ladder set for race day tomorrow, Millican is just excited to be in the show for his first event of 2008. Having only two shots at the track thus far, the typically positive Millican is overall happy to be racing Gainesville .
“Anytime I get the opportunity to drive Evan Knoll’s car, I’m all for it. I’m just happy he said come on, lets go and here we are. This is one of the most attended events the NHRA has all year. To come here for our first race is just fantastic.”
