Humphreys Continues Search for Pro Stock Win at Vegas
Justin Humphreys Angling for First
Pro Stock Victory at Las Vegas There was a Gone Fishing sign on the RaceRedi Motorsports  shop door last
week because that’s what NHRA rookie Pro Stock driver and 2007  Auto Club Road to
the Future nominee Justin Humphreys was doing.

Humphreys, driver of the RaceRedi/Knoll-Gas Energy Pontiac GTO,  was enjoying
a brief respite from POWERade Series competition then, but now it  is back to
work for the season’s final two races.  First up is the ACDelco  Nationals,
Friday through Sunday, where Humphreys hopes to turn in a winning  performance.

Humphreys now is driving a car worthy of a trip  to winner’s circle, thanks
to veterans Bob Glidden (chassis tune-ups) and  Richard Maskin (engine
builder/tuner) calling the automotive shots.  But  niggling problems have foiled the
plans.

“Our first race here (in  April) was our first using Richard’s engines and
we didn’t qualify,” said  Humphreys, “but the car has been running well
lately, we just haven’t been able  to catch even a little bit of luck.”

The blue GTO, meanwhile, has  responded with two fifth and one sixth-place
qualifying positions in the last  four races.  He had quarterfinal finishes at
Indianapolis and Dallas and a  first-round appearance three weeks ago at
Richmond, Va.  The latest stung  because Humphreys came up eight-thousandths of a
second from advancing to the  next round.

He said the car made a very slight hesitation when he  put it in second gear
and that was enough to provide Mike Edwards with the  razor-thin decision.

“We are going to be testing at Tucson  (Arizona) Monday and Tuesday before
going to Las Vegas,” added Humphreys.   “It will be good to get back to work.
We will be ready to get back at it,  that’s for sure.  We aren’t worried
about track conditions there because it  is a good race track.

“We would like to win at least one of  the last two races.  Maybe we can
change our luck at Las  Vegas.”

If his racing fate is as good as his fishing excursion,  Humphreys and the
RaceRedi crew may be the last ones standing Sunday  afternoon.

“We caught a lot of fish,” he said.  Now if he can  just reel in that
elusive victory.
